When you spend most of your childhood caring for a family member and that person in need of care is your mom, it’s not surprising that you choose nursing as a career. Catrese Hooks remembers her mother being sick and spending time with her in hospital. Watching the nurses at work, inspired her to go into nursing and later to seek a position with AssistedCare At Home.
Catrese has worked her way up in nursing. Prior to AssistedCare, she worked in nursing homes and in a skilled nursing facility. She joined AssistedCare because she needed flexibility and likes variety within her job. Her in-home health care work includes patient assessments, ulcer management, wound dressings, post-surgical care, lab blood draws and patient education. She loves that she is part of a team that includes occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists, and dieticians. Like other registered nurses providing in-home health care, Catrese supervises the home health aides, certified nursing assistants and licensed practical nurses on her team and reports to her branch manager in Snow Hill. Her long-term goal is to go back to school and train to be a nurse practitioner.
Essentially, nursing is Catrese’s passion and she is dedicated to caring for others. Inspired by her branch manager, Chrissy Moore, Catrese says she loves seeing a positive change in patients who are provided with quality care and works hard to ensure a positive outcome. She says, “My boss calls me her superstar…because I take it all on and don’t complain.”
Hard work, dedication to the job and loyalty are much appreciated by AssistedCare and with May 6th being National Nurses Day and the start of National Nurses Week, the management team at AssistedCare would like to recognize the contributions that nurses make to the community on this notable day. Nurses are committed to protecting, promoting and improving health care for all and serve the public in a wide range of roles and work settings. Unsurprisingly, nursing has been rated as the most honest and ethical profession for many years.
Historically, nursing gained respect in the 19th century as a result of the pioneering work done by English nurse, Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War. However, it wasn’t until 1954, on the 100th anniversary of Nightingale’s mission to Crimea, the first national nurses week was celebrated. The end of National Nurses Week (May 12th) coincides with Florence Nightingale’s birthday.
Like Florence Nightingale, Catrese is known to go above and beyond with her patients. She says she always gives 100 percent effort at her job because AssistedCare is a good, family-oriented company. She says, “They have your back. If you have an issue, it is quickly resolved and if you are overwhelmed, your boss will help you.” Catrese recommends AssistedCare At Home to anyone looking for work in the home health care field, especially nursing. She says, “If you need flexibility and like independence, it is a good company to work for.”
All the nurses working for AssistedCare At Home offer skilled care with compassion and are a vital resource for patients and care givers. Nurses are essential members of the care team that provides a multi-disciplinary approach to determine the best possible outcomes for patients. Thank you for your service!
